Arkansas State ran the table to win their 2nd consecutive USA Rugby College 7s National Championship over the weekend while the Norwich women’s team defeated James Madison to win the 2013 USA Rugby Women’s Division I College 7s National Championship.
Arkansas State did it in style and were never being seriously tested over the 2-day tournament.
The Red Wolves defeated Saint Mary’s College in the final. The Gaels were no match losing 32-12 under at Bryan Park Soccer Complex. Arkansas State beat Air Force in the quarterfinals, Dartmouth in the semifinals.
Arkansas State’s Dylan Carrion was awarded the inaugural Dave Sitton Memorial Trophy, given to the Men’s Division I Most Valuable Player.
Dartmouth rebounded to defeat Central Washington on the way to a 3rd place finish for the Big Green.
Lindenwood beat Air Force in the Plate Final, Arizona State beat San Diego State in a down-to-the-wire Bowl final, and South Carolina took the day over Colorado State in the Shield Final.
Norwich came in with history on their side. They held a 17-0 record while winning the previous 2 7’s championships. The Cadets marched past Indiana in the quarterfinals, Penn State in the semifinals and took care of the Dukes 17-10 in the final.
Rebekah Bernheim was named the Women’s Division I Most Valuable Player. It was the 2nd consecutive year she received the honor.
Penn State rebounded to beat California to take 3rd place. Indiana defeated Davenport to win the Plate, Texas beat Virginia in the Shield Final and Princeton shutout Clemson in the Shield Final.
“I think one of the great things we’ve seen today is the game gets competitive,” Women’s Eagles Head Coach Pete Steinberg said. “There’s no one dominant team. We’re looking forward to next year’s sevens already.”
