Eagles 7s head coach Matt Hawkins has made two changes to his squad for the Wellington 7s with Madison Hughes and Garrett Bender coming into the team. The changes were necessary as both Steve Tomasin and Nu’u Punimata picked up injuries in Vegas.
Hughes is a standout player from Dartmouth University. In addition to leading Dartmouth in the CRC and Varsity Cup, Hughes has also been a key part of the U.S. age-grade teams. He is the leading scorer in the history of the Junior World Rugby Trophy and has played with the College All-Americans.
Bender is a former college football player who was previously contracted to the Eagles. He was released from his contract in order to return to Minnesota and work on his game. It appears that move has paid off.
Also on the team is Carlin Isles. He announced in Vegas that he was taking a break from rugby to focus on making the Detroit Lions but it appears those plans have been put on hold.
The Eagles are in Pool C with Argentina, Canada, and Scotland
