Excitement for the upcoming 2015 Rugby World Cup is growing and it was turned up a notch this week when a giant Rugby World Cup ball was spotting floating up the Thames from the Tilbury Dock.  The ball then passed under the Tower Bridge and moored at Butler’s Wharf giving the impression a player should boot it through the 2 spires of the famous landmark.

And this was no ordinary 2015 Rugby World Cup ball.  The ball was big enough to fit 68,874 actual match balls and was as tall as 2 of the iconic London double-decker buses stacked on top of each other.

With the eyes of the rugby world watching, a Land Rover rolled out of the ball with 2003 RWC winner Lewis Moody carrying the Webb Ellis Trophy to mark the start of the final leg of the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour sponsored by Land Rover and DHL.

“This is an incredibly exciting time in the build-up to the start of Rugby World Cup 2015,” Land Rover Ambassador Johnson said at the event.  “The anticipation is really starting to build and with just over 100 days to go until the tournament I am sure this amazing Land Rover spectacle, with the reveal of this truly remarkable Defender here in London, has fuelled the excitement even more.”

“The trophy tour is a fantastic way for people to engage and celebrate Rugby in the countdown to the tournament.”

The Webb Ellis Trophy will tour all the Rugby World Cup venues and other locations around the UK and Ireland before making a final stop at Twickenham Stadium for the quadrennial tournament’s opening ceremony on September 18.

The Rugby World Cup is returning to England for the first time since the nation co-host along with France, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales in 1991.  The Webb Ellis Cup spent 4 years in England after they won the 2003 Rugby World Cup.  England remains the only northern hemisphere team to ever win a Rugby World Cup.
