Jerseys Can Predict JWC Winners

In just a few days the Junior World Championship will come to an end. England and South Africa both topped their group and survived tough semi-finals to reach the final while other teams are battling for position. At the bottom of the table both Fiji and Italy will look to avoid relegation to the Junior World Rugby Trophy.

While it will be a battle on the pitch, it’s also going to be a battle in the stands as each group of supporters looks to support their team. Let’s take a look at each of the upcoming matches and predict the winner based on the jerseys each group of supporters will wear.

England vs. South Africa

This is a battle of the last two champions. England won last year and have looked every bit the champion this year. South Africa have had a much more difficult pool and semi-final—they had to play hosts New Zealand twice—and could be more hardened on the final day.

In the jersey battle most English fans will be headed to the game in their traditional white jerseys. The South African fans will be donning the traditional green with yellow trim.

Advantage: South Africa.

Ireland vs. New Zealand

The Irish were the surprise team of the tournament after topping a pool that also contained Wales and France. New Zealand were disappointed to fall to a tough South African team and will be looking to send their fans home happy.

The All Blacks jersey is as iconic as they come while Ireland’s green can come in a jersey or a polo and still look good.

Advantage: New Zealand

France vs. Australia

This may be the most even match of the round. Both France and Australia had their moments in the pool round and then with wins in their semi-final. Of the two Australia is playing better at the moment and is coming off a big win over Samoa.

The jerseys tell a different story. France has their traditional blue while Australia has been more experimental as of late with their country’s 7s jersey really making a statement.

Advantage: France

Wales vs. Samoa

Both teams underperformed by their standards. Now one wants to finish near the middle of the pack but that is what both sides will do. Stylistically Samoa wins this one hands down with thanks to the design in their jerseys, especially in white. Wales aren’t bad but everything could just as well be said in a t-shirt.

Advantage: Samoa

Argentina vs. Scotland

At least they don’t face the danger of relegation. Both Argentina and Scotland have just been barely surviving at this age-grade the last few years. One mistake and they might not get back for awhile. In terms of look, the Pumas has to be the best animal design in rugby while Scotland’s blue is in a good period after some bad looks.

Advantage: Argentina

Fiji vs. Italy

The final match sees Fiji and Italy fight to avoid relegation. If you are just picking based on jerseys the palm tree on Fiji is just awesome. Italy’s jersey has a bit of flair but not enough to overcome Fiji.

Advantage: Fiji
