Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the 7th round with the #249 overall selection in the 2014 NFL draft. The University of Missouri defensive lineman/linebacker is the first publically gay player to be draft by the NFL and has received support from across the country.
The Texas native probably did not expect as much attention when he first announced his sexual orientation in early 2014 but is working to change the way people look at openly gay players. He is part of a new program ‘If You Can Play, You Can Play.’
In the video, Sam is wearing a StandUp Sports Charter t-shirt from the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation. The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation was founded in 2011 by former Northampton Saints Rugby player with the goal of combating homophobia and bullying.
