Rugby Cleat Spotting: April 9, 2014
The Heineken Cup quarterfinals, Super Rugby action, the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series in Guangzhou, and more was where Rugby Rugby made some rugby boot spots last weekend. Did you spot any cool boots internationally or at your local pitch?
The trend in sports footwear is for bright colors but some players still opted for the classic when their play does the speaking for them. Toulon’s Craig Burden pulled on the traditional black/white adidas World Cup against Leinster in the Heineken Cup. Toulon won 29-14 at Stade Felix Mayol. The defending champions will now face Munster in the semifinal on Sunday, April 27.
The New Zealand All Blacks Sarah Goss also picked the adidas World Cup as her boot of choice. The ‘Sistas’ defeated Australia 26-12 in the final of the Guangzhou Sevens. The win leaves New Zealand on top of the Series standing with 1 tournament left. The Sevens vice-captain pushed in 1 try in the final.
At the same 7’s tournament, the U.S.A. Lady Eagles’ Dana Meschisi was sporting a classic look from the Nike line, the Nike Tiempo Legend V in Black/White. The U.S. lost to China in the Bowl semifinals.
The Blue/White colorway of the adidas line of rugby boots has made it impossible to miss. Here is an anonymous player sporting the adidas Predator Incurza in the colorway but what stands out is the custom Gloucester rugby socks. Team socks and custom socks are all the rage and perfect for your team. Interested in some custom rugby socks for your team? Call the World Rugby Shop team wear department at 1-877-776-76511-877-776-7651 to get more information (tell them RugbyRugby sent you).
The socks did not help the side as Gloucester fell out of Europe with a 36-24 loss to London Wasps in the Amlin Challenge Cup.
And down in Super Rugby more and more players are starting to wear what players would call football boots (ie soccer cleats). Andrew Smith of the Brumbies was in a pair of the Nike Hypervenom in the White/Black/Volt colorway in the 26-9 win over Blues
Jurgen Visser of Bulls shows the ups he gets from his Nike Mercurial Vapor IX in Neptune Blue but it was not enough as Hurricanes won a tightly-contest match 25-20 om Napier.
Ben Tapuai is 1 of the first rugby players we have spotted in the new adidas Nitrocharge silo. The Solar Slime colorway stands out as does the control band across the bottom of the laces. It did not help in the result as the Force scored a 78th minute try to steal a 32-29 victory in Brisbane. This is so new to rugby that you will need to visit the World Soccer Shop to purchase a pair.
Willie Le Roux was kicking with the Nike Hypervenom SG Pro in Neo Lime/Poison Green/Total Crimson/Black.
And despite losing 6-29 to Harlequins in the Amlin Challenge Cup quarterfinal, someone must be a fan of the team. The skies over Stade Jean Bouin were eerily similar to the team colors after the loss.
